Ladies Night

Three of our lady photographers provided us with a most entertaining evening. Lizzie Stewart, Carole Smith and Jill Dobson shared the evening presenting a delightful mix of presentation and photographic style.

‘Walking in the Austrian Alps’ was Jill’s first sequence which was supported by very relaxing music. Spectacular waterfalls, wild flowers, glaciers and the rugged peaks of the high alp provided great opportunity for her to photograph and record. The ski lifts gave access to the very highest peaks with views of the recent effects of highland glaciation. Her second sequence was ‘My Selection Box’ which was a mix of her favorite images. Fun with the family, walks in the Lakes and Yorkshire Dales, Thorpe Perrow, Studley Royal and the east coast, all supported by bright foot taping music resulted in a very entertaining sequence.

Carole provided us with a very different way to present photographs. ‘Where in the World’ gave her audience a chance to guess in which countries the various groups of photographs had been taken. Some really dramatic desert landscapes and canyons contrasted the sky scrapers, brown bears and the bright colours of autumn, followed by Casino buildings and then other National parks. We all guessed the USA but then Carole made it more difficult. Sections of wall, wall paintings and vehicles in Germany. Markets, mosques, local people and a famous rebuilt bridge came from Bosnia. Glacial lakes, Orca whales, salmon fishing, sea plains, totem poles from Canada. Bridges, festivals, volcanoes and uncovered ruins from Italy. Glaciers, bright coastal towns, fjords and coastal mountains from Norway. The buildings and squares along with local dancers and street life from Poland was followed by a difficult Slovinia section with candid shots of local buildings and lakes. Finally Spain with its festivals, windmills, lakes and mountains concluded a wonderful world tour captured with some really stunning shots by Carole. What a great way to view quality photographs from around the world.

Lizzie Stewart is well known for her amazing portrait photography and she did not disappoint. Her first sequence was based on ‘The Goths of Whitby’. Lizzie used a very different approach to presenting her photographs and she had chosen her music well. She concentrated on the makeup and faces of the Goths, highlighting their hair, eyes and many facial piercings. The detail in each photograph was beautiful and we were left with no doubt that we should be careful walking home in the dark. ‘Appleby Horse Fayre’ is a regular location for Lizzie and her camera. Again her music was well chosen and it fitted well to the many activities shown. So many Travelers and their families congregate with their horses and the friendship, fraternity and comradery amongst the participants was very apparent. The horses being ridden bare back in the river, the portrait studies of the on lookers, their many tattoos and many amazing action shots made for a very compelling conclusion to her show.

What a very enjoyable evening. Our lady photographers had certainly booked themselves for a return show at a later date. It was clear that members had enjoyed the evening and our President Keith Roberts thanked them for their hard work, photographic talent and imagination.
